Jul 19, 2013 - AirPlay is by far one of the most popular features of the Apple TV. On iOS devices, it allows the easy streaming of audio and video to an Apple.
I just bought a brand new ATV (I assume an ATV2) but haven't opened the package yet. Before I do I want to be sure it will do what I want it to do.
My main reason for getting it is to be able to stream videos from any internet site on my PC to it. Can anyone verify for me that this will perform this function and that they recommend the ATV for this purpose? Also, if there are any specific set up instructions I need to know to accomplish this, can you please elaborate on those as well? One last question relates to this process and the useage of the apple remote. If I can, in fact, stream internet movies to the ATV, will there be an accessible menu to view the options on the ATV? If so, again, what are the steps needed to accomplish this. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Short answer is. You cannot stream videos from websites on a browser on a PC to an AppleTV. You can stream web videos from browsers and various apps on an iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) to an AppleTV via the AirPlay feature though. As doge has alluded to, this is dependent on the website enabling the video to be streamed which is dependent on their license to distribute the video in that fashion. Flash video can be viewed and stream in this way from iOS devices via the SkyFire browser, that transcodes videos to HTML 5 video on the fly so as to be compatible with iOS. Not an app, but a feature of iOS 4.3. As long as your iPod Touch and appleTV are on the same network then anytime you play audio or video a little icon will appear to the right of the ffwd button.
Hit it and it will list all the appleTVs, airport expresses, compatible AirPlay docks and AV Receivers on the network. Choose one and it will play through that source. So in the case of web video, you go to the web page on your iPod Touch and play the video. Hit the AirPlay button.
Choose the appleTV and the video will begin to play on your TV. But as I eluded to. Depending on the webpage, they may or may not allow it to play thought AirPlay depending on their licensing to do so.
Many apps have AirPlay enabled as well. IPod app, Photos app ( to show photos), YouTube, Vevo, Flixter and IMDb (movie previews), Vimeo (short independant films. Web page works too). Expanding every day. Very cool feature.

The support for AirPlay is quite profound in Elmedia Player. As an AirPlay sender it'll stream local music and videos from Mac to Apple TV or another AirPlay enabled devices (e.g. Another Mac computer, Android devices, etc). Elmedia Player can also work as an AirPlay receiver when you stream local videos and music from an AirPlay device (it can be another Mac, iOS, Android device) to a Mac with Elmedia Player installed. You can also stream web videos to AirPlay enabled devices with the help of Elmedia Player. When you AirPlay online videos from YouTube, Dailymotion, or Vimeo, Elmedia can stream them without the in-built ads that you would otherwise have to watch or wait to skip.
Note: Currently for devices running iOS 9 and later Elmedia offers audio streaming only. AirPlay Mac advantages of Elmedia Player: 1. Supports streaming videos of up to 4K quality. In case of using Apple TV it should be Apple TV 4K.
Streams audio and video files in their original format or transcodes in real time. This way you won't need to convert files that are originally not compatible with AirPlay, Elmedia will still stream them anyway. Supports subtitles (both embedded and external) 4. Streams content from YouTube, Dailymotion and Vimeo (via the Open Online Video option). Supports playlists (queue up a bunch of videos in Elmedia Player to watch in succession). Gives you full control over media streaming directly in the app.
You can play, pause, seek, or stop the video playback, as well as adjust the volume.
